Sensor Films Inc. receives national recognition for flexible electronics innovation
Starlight Digital Manufacturing Platform enables a modular approach to flexible and hybrid electronic manufacturing
Rochester, New York (March 14, 2016) – Four months following the debut of its first product – the Starlight Digital Manufacturing Platform – Sensor Films, Inc. (SFI) has been named winner of the 2016 FLEXI Innovation Award for outstanding design and ingenuity in flexible electronics manufacturing.
The award was presented March 3rd during the 2016 FlexTech Alliance Conference and Trade Show in Monterey, CA., the result of the Starlight platform ’s modular approach to flexible and hybrid electronic manufacturing. The system enables large area deposition of functional and decorative materials on a variety of cut-sheet, flexible, porous or rigid substrates. It is also scalable for roll to roll production.
Peter Hessney, SFI’s president noted, “We are truly grateful to be recognized by the FlexTech Alliance as the 2016 FLEXI Innovation Award winner. The award represents everything we at SFI have been working towards in bringing an additive manufacturing prototyping and production system to the emerging market of functional printing.” (Click here for Starlight video).
“We are pleased to recognize SFI’s Starlight platform as a very versatile means to print electronic materials on flexible substrates with this FLEXI Award,” notes Michael Ciesinski, president of FlexTech, a SEMI Strategic Association Partner.
“FlexTech works hard to be an advocate for flexible, printed, and hybrid electronics and developing a strong ecosystem for commercial and military applications,” Ciesinski said. “The Starlight system’s modularity and scalability puts it in a unique position in that eco-system, to easily integrate with silicon components; and it offers an efficient hybrid manufacturing system to rapidly produce new devices.”
Malcolm Thompson is executive director of NextFlex – America’s Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Institute, a part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) that is responsible for bringing together technology elements to accelerate the manufacturing of flexible electronics. He stated: “SFI’s Starlight Platform satisfies many of the requirements critical to bridging the gap between promising applied research and scalable manufacturing solutions. Starlight’s additive manufacturing system integrates easily with silicon based components and can quickly turn out a variety of prototypes that can be scaled to production volumes with great confidence.”
This is the 9th year of the FLEXI Awards, and the winners join a select group of companies and individuals from past years. Judging was done on a set of nominations based on a pre-described set of criteria, by a panel of non-affiliated, independent, industry experts.
